Communicating Roman Catholic Thought
The Hank Center hosts a variety of panels and audience participation events where speakers and panelists address a current social topic connected to concerns within the Catholic Intellectual Heritage. Programs include Catholic Minds, Catholic Matters, The Cardinal Newman lecture series, day-long colloquia, and panel discussions.
Catholic Thought, Citizenship, and the Public Good
This event series focuses on how Catholic thought impacts civic duty, public good, and our world as a whole.
Catholic Minds, Catholic Matters
The Catholic Minds, Catholic Matters Lecture series offers public lectures on important Catholic thinkers or topics directly linked to a concern within the Catholic intellectual heritage.
The Saint John Henry Newman Lecture Series
The Saint John Henry Newman Lecture series is named after the great 19th century English prelate who wrote so movingly about his intellectual journey toward Roman Catholicism in his spiritual autobiography, Apologia pro vita sua (1864). Newman's work helped later generations of Catholics and Catholic converts map out ways to understand the datum of religious faith in light of the contemporary issues facing modern life. Honoring this engagement with the Catholic tradition, CCIH will invite scholars to recount their own discovery (or rediscovery) of the Catholic intellectual heritage in light of their ongoing scholarship.
Cardinal Bernardin Common Cause Lecture Series
Named after Joseph Bernardin, Cardinal Archbishop of Chicago from 1982 to 1996, for his influential work toward Church reform after the Second Vatican Council through his Catholic Common Group Initiative. The Cardinal Bernardin Common Cause lecture series offers Catholic prelates a platform to engage Loyola’s community in common cause with the Church on issues facing us today.
Jesuit Studies
Our Jesuit Studies series focuses on both historic Jesuit Missions and how these Jesuit thinkers still impact todays' world.
Initiative on Faith and Science
The Initiative on Faith and Science series analyzes of how Catholic Thought and Scientific advancement coincide in our world.
Conversations on Restorative Justice
A new series on how Restorative Justice plays a role in our society and how we can approach this topic from the Catholic thought.
Colloquia, Symposia, and Public Events
The Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage hosts a number of colloquia every academic year. These events are so named because of their conversational nature. Seeking to spearhead the universal significance of Catholicism, each colloquium engages a unique topic and features a number of guest speakers, each one a noted authority in their respective discipline. Such events generally include a keynote address, a response, and free time for Q&A.
Conferences
The Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage offers a variety of conferences as platforms for the exposition and interchange of ideas by specialists in their own field.‌
