Research Interests
Dr. Banks's research focuses on the impact of culture on communication, cross-cultural adaptation and integration, and the use of Japanese literature and pop culture to foster cross-cultural awareness. She examines the culture shocks and sociocultural integration processes experienced by students studying abroad and develops educational support to enhance their interactions with local students. Her current primary interest is designing and evaluating Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) programs for American university students learning Japanese and Japanese university students engaged in global studies. She also integrates Japanese literary works and pop culture into her teaching to explore values, worldviews, traditions, and identities as conveyed through storytelling.
