Babette, a refugee from counter-revolutionary Paris, arrives in a remote village in Berlevaag Fjord, Norway. She begs two local elderly and pious Christian sisters to hire her as a housekeeper. After the sisters' father dies, the pastor of a small Protestant church, they decide to hold a dinner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Babette prepares a feast which expresses her appreciation to the local residents and transforms their lives.
