WISER
WOMEN IN SCIENCE ENABLING RESEARCH (WISER)
The WISER (Women in Science Enabling Research) program was originally designed in 1993 to promote undergraduate research supporting women in STEM fields at 51Âþ»Chicago. In a 2021 report from the US Census Bureau1, the 2019 census data indicates that women make up 48% of all workers in the United States but only 27% in STEM occupations. This is small improvement on the 1994 statistics indicating that only 22% of the STEM labor force was comprised of women. In an effort support women currently in and potentially interested in careers in the sciences, the WISER program offers mentoring, builds community, and offers 51Âþ»undergraduates of all identities the tools to explore careers in science and research.
Students are welcome to participate in and attend lectures, panel discussions, and workshops organized by WISER. Undergraduate students interested in STEM fields with no prior laboratory or research experience are invited to apply to the Laura L. Mayer Mentorship Program, which runs from September through April each academic year. This mentorship and research experience provides each student with a $4000 scholarship.
WISER Internship opportunities (faculty projects) for AY 2025-2026 will be posted by January 6, 2025.
